It began in 2018 with a series dedicated to notable Bulgarian women from the period after the Liberation - women who left their mark in education, culture, literature, medicine, charity, social causes and public life. It was this project that gave the Foundation its name and shaped one of its main directions: to bring back to public memory the contribution of women who shaped the face of modern Bulgaria.The project collects the stories of 20 exceptional Bulgarian women with different biographies, professions and causes. Among them are teachers, writers, doctors, benefactors, artists, publishers, public figures and organizers. What they have in common is that they have paved new paths - for education, culture, social change, civil rights and a more visible place for women in public life.The seriesWork on the project began with research, digitization of archival materials and the creation of a special series on the website "Girls from the City". The Wake Up Foundation presents for the first time in Bulgaria a cybersecurity manual for those affected by domestic violence.For victims of domestic violence, digital abuse is real and dangerous. It is a constant cycle of control and harassment that many people do not know how to break.A study by the foundation shows that for 85% of people who leave an abusive relationship, digital abuse continues after the breakup. This has a serious and long-lasting effect on the mental state of those affected, and often on their children.Digital violence has many faces. It can include:<ul><li>constant phone calls and messages</li><li>location tracking</li><li>installation of spy apps</li><li>hacked emails and social media accounts</li><li>surveillance through home devices (cameras, smart devices)</li><li>tracking devices placed in a car</li></ul>It is important to be able to recognize these forms of violence. Cybersecurity Guide

In recent days, facts have come to light in Bulgaria that are not just shocking – they shook one of our most basic feelings of security. We are talking about women secretly filmed in beauty salons and doctors' offices, in moments of complete vulnerability, without their knowledge or consent. Recordings made in places where cameras are prohibited by law, and subsequently distributed on paid pornographic sites.The illegal filming and distribution of intimate footage is a grave violation of human rights. It is an invasion of privacy, bodily integrity, medical confidentiality and human dignity. Online violence does not end at the moment of filming. Every viewing, every sharing, every “click” is a new act of assault. The fact that some of these videos have been viewed tens of thousands of times shows the scale of the humiliation and deep trauma that these women are experiencing.The Wakeup Foundation, as a foundation that opposes gender-based violence, has taken the following actions:We contacted 29 women who believe their rights have been violated.We provided legal expertise and prepared specific guidelines for the protection of their rights. We prepared a form for filing a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office and provided it to those affected. We continue to monitor the development of the case and are ready to provide assistance, including in taking civil actions at the appropriate time. We present the second phase of the sociological study "Hear My Voice" - Domestic Violence, Institutions and Society, commissioned by The Wake Up Foundation.The study is based on 15 in-depth interviews with women, members of the Facebook group "You are not alone - together against violence", the largest active online community for help and advice for victims of domestic violence, managed by The Wake Up Foundation. "Hear My Voice" Study Phase 2. The Needs and Attitudes of Victims of Domestic Violence and Their Children

Red Flags is a domestic violence prevention initiative that brings together the efforts of The Wake Up Foundation, Fashion Days, and the advertising agency Human. In November 2023, Fashion Days and Human approached The Wake Up Foundation with the idea of dedicating a special collection to support our work. As a result, six T-shirt designs were created, each illustrating a different “red flag” – early warning signs of abuse in a relationship. The social media campaign significantly increased public awareness of domestic violence, generating more than 2 million views, while all proceeds from the sale of the collection were donated to the work of The Wake Up Foundation. In November 2025, the three organisations joined forces once again for a new prevention campaign – Red Flags Collection 2. This time, the collection featured a series of scarves designed not conceal abuse but expose it through their messages and visual elements. All proceeds from the collection were dedicated to supporting the work of The Wake Up Foundation. The Wake Up Foundation gave its expertise on domestic abuse throughout the campaign. Our role included identifying and defining the red flags, establishing the ethical framework for sharing personal stories, and ensuring a sensitive and responsible approach to presenting survivors’ experiences. As the organisation managing Bulgaria’s largest active community of domestic abuse survivors, with more than 11,000 members, we enabled the stories of women who trust us every day to reach a wider audience. A central element of the campaign was the song “Dad, I Fell in Love with a Tough Guy” by Bulgarian artist Papi Hans. Both the lyrics and the accompanying music video reveal the mechanisms and escalation of abuse within intimate relationships. Since its release in November, the music video has generated more than 1,051,600 organic views. Ahead of November 25 – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – Sofia Municipality, led by Mayor Vasil Terziev, supported the initiative by broadcasting the music video throughout Sofia’s metro system and tram network during December. On February 14, Valentine’s Day, Sofia Municipality presented an outdoor exhibition on Lovers’ Bridge in Sofia, featuring stories shared by survivors as part of the campaign. The stories were also displayed on billboards across the city. The Wake Up Foundation provided these testimonies from women who courageously chose to share their experiences and help others recognise abuse and seek support. In February, at the invitation of the Ministry of Education and Science and Sofia Municipality, we participated in a pilot educational initiative in 37 schools. The song and campaign materials were used as tools to facilitate discussions with students about recognizing early signs of abuse and building healthy relationships. The Red Flag collection vol. 2 - fashion fights domestic violence

Only in this way can we provide protection, support and real change for women who fight for their lives and freedom every day," says Preslava Fentham-Fletcher, Development Director of The Wake Up Foundation.The song, specially created for the campaign, performed by Desi Slava and written by Papi Hans, tells a story familiar to many young women – a relationship that began as a promise of love, but gradually turned into a series of mental and physical abuse. The title “Dad, I Fell in Love with an Alpha” sounds like a confession, but in fact it highlights the early signs of unhealthy behavior – those that are often disguised under the guise of concern. The song aims to encourage open conversation about when a relationship crosses the line from healthy to toxic."My participation in the campaign is a personal mission. I know what it's like to experience violence and remain silent, and therefore I believe that no woman should be left alone in her pain. Last year, I saw how many women recognized themselves in the message and found the strength to share their story - it showed how important this cause is," says the singer."Through music, I want to give them a hand, to feel support and hope. I believe that a song can break the silence and give courage for change," she added."In Bulgaria, we often call a 'man' a person who solves his problems with aggression, instead of principles and words," says Papi Hans. He shares that this is one of his favorite songs from the new album and he felt that it would make more sense if he dedicated it to the cause of domestic violence. "We cannot stop violence with words alone, but we can help to break the cult of this image. Let's support young girls not to give their pure love to someone who will not protect it, but to choose men who know how to love."The limited edition scarf collection features five original designer designs, each highlighting a different “red flag” in relationships. The designs feature contrasting colors, intertwined shapes and symbols that convey a message of strength and visibility. The scarves are designed to expose, not cover up, violence – reminding us that early signs should not be ignored. Made from high-quality materials and with a strong social message, the designs will be available on the Fashion Days website in the coming days.The project is based on the desire to give a voice through art to women whose experiences often remain invisible. The song draws attention to early signals of violated boundaries and reminds us that change begins with awareness. "Safer Workplaces. How Business Can Support Victims of Domestic Violence" Guide

The survey was conducted among members of the Facebook group "You are not alone - together against violence" - the largest active online community for help and advice for victims of domestic violence, with over 10,000 members. Most often they are the first a person turns to for help and advice. In addition, over 50% of survivors who have successfully escaped a domestic violence situation report the key involvement of friends and relatives in logistical support. Believing that family and friends are vital allies in a survivor's journey to freedom and that their support can be transformative, the campaign, offers resources on how to support someone affected by domestic violence.&nbsp; &nbsp;The campaign highlight the following ways to help loved ones intervene promptly and effectively<ul><li>Active listening: people affected by domestic abuse often turn to their loved ones for validation and to share their experiences without fear of judgment.</li><li>Empathy: providing emotional support can enable someone to take steps to leave an abusive relationship&nbsp;</li><li>Empowerment - supporting them in taking back control, creating a sense of personal boundaries, the right to control their own destiny.</li></ul>The role of family and friends goes beyond immediate crisis intervention. Information campaign "On the front line"

To: The Secretary of the National Council for Prevention and Combating of Domestic Violence Mr. Rosen Zhelyazkov - Minister-Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr. Georgi Georgiev - Minister of JusticeLETTER From: NGO Coalition "Together Against Violence" January 27, 2025Subject: Position regarding&nbsp; the selection of candidates for members&nbsp; of the National Council for Prevention and&nbsp; Protection from Domestic ViolenceAccording to Art. 6, para. 3, item 10 and para. 4 of the Regulations on the structure, organization and activities of the National Council for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence, the composition of the members of the National Council includes four representatives of non-profit legal entities under Art. 6a, para. 5 of the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, which carry out activities on prevention and protection from domestic violence, elected in accordance with the procedure of Chapter Three for a term of one year, as the nominal composition of the National Council is determined by a decision of the Council of Ministers after the election procedure in accordance with the rules of Chapter Three of the Regulations and includes main and reserve members.We believe that the selection process for candidates from the quota for members of the National Council for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence was carried out in disregard of the principles of publicity and transparency. The application procedure was announced in the period from 02.01.2024 to 07.01.2025, which actually gives only 3 working days for submitting documents, ignoring the weekend of January 4 and 5 (Saturday and Sunday). Therefore, the requirements of Art. 8, para. 3 and 8 of the Regulations were not met.No efforts were made to publicize the fact that the procedure was about to be carried out. Especially considering the fact that time is needed to prepare the required documentation. This is especially true with regard to the additional requirement, not regulated in the Regulations on the structure, organization and activities of the National Council for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence, to provide documents proving the existence of the required experience of at least 2 years in the field of prevention and protection from domestic violence, before the date of submission of the application and proving that at the time of submission of the application the organization is carrying out real activity. In the present case, the lack of predictability has led to the fact that only two organizations have submitted documents, which is extremely insufficient, given the need for expertise, evident from the inclusion of many directly working on the topic in the working groups at a previous stage of the Council's work. The lack of actual, rather than formally stated, transparency is a significant problem. We believe that the above-described situation creates a barrier to the candidacy of non-profit legal entities that carry out activities related to the prevention and protection of domestic violence.Within the framework of the working groups held during the discussion of the drafts of the new provisions of the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, special attention was paid to the need for active involvement of non-governmental organizations, as they have the greatest expertise in the field of combating this social problem. Actions are needed to ensure sufficient publicity and transparency of such procedures, as well as to provide a realistic period for preparation, which would enable all interested parties to prepare and submit their applications.We ask that you reopen, in accordance with the regulations, the procedure for the election of NGO members in order to supplement the four seats in the National Assembly designated for the civil sector.NGO Coalition "Together Against Violence"&nbsp;

Regarding the election of NGO members to the National Council for the Prevention and Combating of Domestic Violence

The right word can save a life!

On 12th August 2024, together with Deystvie, we submitted a petition to the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, to veto the divisive law against "LGBT propaganda" in Bulgarian schools. Among other things, it bans the mentioning of any "non-traditional" views in Bulgarian schools. The amendments in the law are a copy of a law passed in 2013 in Russia and are in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.&nbsp; &nbsp;The petition was signed by 76 NGOs and 7038 individuals - this is our success measured in numbers.The President did not veto it, but the European Commission asked Bulgaria to explain the LGBT propaganda law. The amendments have been criticised by various human rights groups. The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O'Flaherty publicly announced that he was "deeply concerned" by the law passed by the Bulgarian parliament.Campaigning agains this law is ongoing.&nbsp; &nbsp;

We asked for presidential veto

Girls in Bulgaria face difficulties in self-assertion and stress resilience, while boys report lower levels of empathy, curiosity and motivation to express themselves. This is one of the conclusions of an international study of emotional and social skills among Bulgarian youth, conducted for the first time in Bulgaria.With the financial support of the Lachezar Tsotsorkov Foundation, Bulgaria was included in the global study of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which in 2023 conducted the first-ever survey of 3,000 Bulgarian youth aged 15, comparing them with their peers from 21 countries. The study "Socio-Emotional Skills for a Better Life", the results of which were announced on April 26, 2024 during an international conference in Sofia, revealed the current emotional and social skills of our adolescents and how they affect various aspects of their lives.What we learned:In Bulgaria, 40% of 15-year-olds report having smoked cigarettes or consumed alcohol at least once in their lives, which is above the average for all other countries participating in the study (17%);In Bulgaria, 45% of students have skipped school (above the average for all other countries: 29%);Girls report lower levels of assertiveness and stress resilience, energy, emotional control, trust, optimism compared to boys. Boys report lower levels of empathy, tolerance, curiosity, achievement motivation and creativity than girls. Gender differences in assertiveness and emotional control are significantly larger between genders than among other participants from other countries.Relationships between social-emotional skills and students’ ambitions for the future in Bulgaria:15-year-old students with higher levels of curiosity, perseverance, empathy, tolerance, creativity, achievement motivation, self-control, optimism, energy, responsibility, stress resilience, emotional control and sociability tend to have higher expectations of completing higher education and occupying a managerial or skilled job position when they are 30;In Bulgaria, students with higher levels of confidence also tend to have higher expectations of completing higher education, while students with higher levels of energy and trust tend to have higher expectations of a managerial or professional job position.The link between social and emotional skills and academic performance is clear: In Bulgaria, 15-year-old students with higher levels of achievement motivation, perseverance, responsibility, tolerance and emotional control tend to achieve better grades in all three subjects: mathematics, reading and the arts.In connection with the worrying results of the research, a coalition of non-governmental organizations, uniting dozens of NGOs, finds a direct correlation between increasing the social and emotional skills of adolescents with and their realization in life. The coalition appeals to the Ministry of Education to introduce a training program aimed at increasing these “soft skills” that in many European countries are already considered an integral part of the educational process. A statement from the coalition says:"We call for cooperation with the civil sector and its specialists, who can assist the state in conceptualizing and implementing educational programs as an integral part of school classes. We believe that this will be a process and will take time and work. But we, representatives of the civil sector, committed to the topic of human rights and the defense of democratic values, believe that only together can we achieve a more comprehensive educational system that takes into account the needs of adolescents and increases their emotional quotient in parallel with their intellectual abilities."The world-proven methodology measures skills such as assertiveness, empathy, creativity, curiosity, tolerance, emotional control, sociability between girls and boys. International survey among 15-year-olds reveals worrying picture for Bulgarian youth

Thanks to the invitation of the European Women's Lobby - Bulgarian Platform, The Wake Up Foundation was a delegate to the annual general meeting of the European Women's Lobby (EWL), which took place on April 19-21 in Bucharest.The event, which brought together over 100 representatives from 23 European countries, once again united the efforts and shared the experience of dozens of organizations that protect the rights of women and girls. The working sessions and debates were framed by the EWL’s manifesto "Europe at a crossroads. The equal participation of women in all spheres of life - a prerequisite for peace, prosperity and social change". Attention was drawn to the fact that there is a regression in the defense of women's rights in Europe with increasing gender and patriarchal stereotypes. The erosion of fundamental human rights, such as the right to safe abortion and the right to protection from violence, is alarming. The number of women who are killed by their partner on the territory of the European Union continues to grow.One in three women in the EU has suffered physical or sexual violence, and one in two women over the age of 15 has experienced sexual harassment. The war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East are putting the lives and integrity of women and girls at extreme risk. Therefore, putting women's rights at the heart of European policies is an indispensable condition for the successful implementation of European projects for peace, democracy, equality and solidarity.The representative of The Wake Up Foundation at the event was Preslava Fentham - Fletcher, who shared:"Participating in the conference was extremely important for uniting our efforts in defending women's rights in all spheres of life. Managing the largest community of people affected by domestic violence - the facebook group "You are not alone", we know the challenges women are facing, such as equality, economic sustainability, access to justice and the inherent right to a life free from violence."All those present at the event united in asking MEPs to vote FOR the "Directive on Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence" on April 24. This long-in-the-making document offers more effective and comprehensive protection for women, for example, from sexual exploitation and cyber violence. A legal action that we owe to 250 million women in Europe, including Bulgaria.The directive is the first EU law to ensure that women victims of violence, including domestic violence, receive appropriate protection, support, access to justice and compensation, regardless of where they live in the EU. This legislation covers not only traditional forms of violence, but also crimes such as female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, sharing of intimate or manipulated material without consent, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, unwanted receipt of sexual material, online incitement to violence or hatred. We, The Wake Up Foundation, have appealed to the Bulgarian MEPs to vote FOR this directive, as it is extremely important to uphold women's rights, especially in the changing political environment. This vote will be a springboard for the next representatives of the European Parliament to complete the directive in the upcoming mandate.Once the directive is adopted, we, as well as all members of the European Women's Lobby, will continue to campaign to extend its scope to tackle all forms of sexual and reproductive exploitation. We will follow the vote tomorrow (24 April) as well as the progress on the adoption of the "Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence". &nbsp;

All the stories are from women who have experienced violence but have managed to get out of toxic relationships and share their experiences to inspire hope and confidence in those who need support to take the first step.The videos can be viewed on the social channels of The Wake Up Foundation. This campaign shines a light on the journey of abuse survivors, guiding them from victims to heroes who have changed their lives and are ready to talk about their experiences.There is one voice that will never lie to us - our own. It shows the truth, and The Ask Yourself Ritual is precisely aimed at checking whether we are listening to ourselves enough.In less than two months, the results that the ritual shows are: 75.84% of respondents are in a relationship that seems healthy and peaceful. 16.74% are in a relationship that seems to have aspects that deserve additional attention. 7.42% are in a relationship that seems to have worrying signals and it is advisable to share them with loved ones or a specialist. Even the smallest number is too big when it comes to violence in relationships. The Ask Yourself Ritual

&nbsp;1st February &nbsp;2024 The letter opened with: With this letter, we would like to inform you about real and actual problems in the implementation of the Law for protection from domestic violence (LPDV).lTh echanges to the law were passed by the 49th National Assembly on 21.07.2023 and 07.08.2023 after years of delay. The Bulgarian institutions were given a sufficiently long period of 6 months to allow the responsible ministries, institutions and state bodies to prepare and adapt the organisation of their activities to adopt the changes in the law.&nbsp; The amended &nbsp;Law came into power &nbsp;on 1st January 2024 and the changes had to work to fulfil its purpose, which is to provide prompt and effective protection, assistance and support to people affected by or at risk of domestic violence and to exercise a preventive and deterrent effect on the perpetrator of violence. &nbsp;These changes were aimed at improving the lives of victims of domestic violence. The delay in the adoption and implementation of these changes has cost the health and lives of many people. People affected by domestic violence &nbsp;continue to rely mainly on charities that have been working for years to support them. &nbsp;

35 NGOs urge the government to speed up the implementation of the updated Law for protection from domestic violence

The Wake Up Foundation and the protesters in support of Deborah Mihaylova from Stara Zagora are the winners of the prestigeous human rights award "Human of the Year 2023" in the 16th edition of the event organised by the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee. We were acknowledged for our advocacy work which resulted in changing the Law for protection from domestic violence. We achieved this by uniting 37 NGOs in a non-formal coalition "Together against violence" which worked with polititians in making the much-needed changes a reality.&nbsp;

The Red Flag collection - fashion fights domestic violence

On April 20, 2023 we were honored in the Sixth Annual HEROES Awards at an official ceremony. The prestigious awards honor people and organizations with exceptional contributions to the development of volunteer culture in Bulgaria. The awards jury went through the difficult selection process from a total of 167 nominations to reach a total of 32 honorees.We won the "Relentlessness Award" for our work in protecting women's rights and our efforts in combating domestic violence, including through better awareness of the problem and the need for effective solutions. &nbsp;

15 March 2023To address the much needed changes in the Law for protection from domestic violence in Bulgaria we united 37 NGOs in a no-formal coalition "Together Against Violence". 15 март 2023На &nbsp;организирана от нас среща с бъдещи народни представители 37 неправителствени организации, обединени в Коалиция „Заедно срещу насилието“, призоваха политическите сили да се ангажират с приемането на нов Закон за домашното насилие.Представителите на гражданския сектор, сред които Фондация "Асоциация Анимус", Фондация П.У.Л.С., Български фонд за жените и ние, Фондация „Будителките“, прочетоха призив в настояване за спешни и неотложни действия по разглеждането и приемането на нов Закон за изменения и допълнения на Закона за защита от домашно насилие (ЗЗДН), веднага след конституирането на новия парламент на Република България.На срещата присъстваха представители на Коалиция „Продължаваме промяната – Демократична България“, сред които – Калина Константинова, Надежда Йорданова, Лена Бориславова и представители на политическа партия ГЕРБ, сред които – Анна Александрова и Рая Назарян. На срещата не присъстваха представители на ДПС, БСП, ИТН.
